An interesting letter penned by Ambrose Powell Hill from when he was a 19 year old cadet at West Point. The letter is written on a printed invitation to a series of US Corps of Cadets "cotillion parties." Hill launches an amorous barrage of words "do not draw up and put on a dignified reserve at the 'Dear' for you know you have given yourself to me...and I say the Lord save you from the bargain you've made; but the banns have been published and with the blessing of 'Uncle Sam' we'll be married sometime before the millennium." Most of the letter describes Hill's love of various cuisines, and he tells his love "remarkably fond of a good dinner, so buy one of Mrs. Randolph's cookery books and set yourself to studying; also take a few lessons..." An entertaining letter of a type seldom encountered and rare autograph, as Hill was killed at Petersburg on 2 April 1865. This is likely one of only a few letters from Hill as a young cadet attempting to swoon his "Dear Georgie" (Miss Georgie Jones). The letter exhibits light edge wear with several creases and has yellowed over time. Writing is legible with slight fading. The letter comes with a James Spence Authentication full letter of authenticity. This letter was once part of the renowned Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Good.
