Kentucky flintlock rifle made by John Orton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1800. 52" overall length with 36" octagon .36 caliber rifled barrel with rifle sights and stamped "JNO ORTON". Unmarked flintlock with double set triggers and silver back plates. Full length curly maple stock with brass hardware, including an engraved 4-piece patchbox with 4 piercings and spread eagle finial. Rifle has 16 silver inlays, including a large Eagle on the cheek and a fern branch in front of patchbox. Rifle has well-done forestock molding with most inlays engraved. Period brass plate repair in front of lock. Accompanied by first edition copy of "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age" by Joe Kindig Jr.. PROVENANCE: Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Overall fair, metal shows some light pitting. The lock is probably a conversion, and gun has probably been set back approximately 6". The brass has original patina with replaced patchbox lid. Barrel has an old, plugged sight dovetail. Wood has original aged finish with wear expected with age. Dark pitted bore with mechanics needing attention. Rifle displays very well.
