According to the Colt Factory Archive letter, this gun left the factory as a .44/40 with a 7 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, and unlisted stocks. It was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., Chicago, Illinois, on August 23, 1900, in a shipment of 2 guns. This gun is in stunning condition and comes with an original pink picture box. According to Don Wilkerson in his book "Colt's Double-Action Revolver Model of 1878", on page 191, he states that only eight of these original boxes are known. Single line address on top of the barrel, "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". Roll die caliber marking on the left side of the barrel, "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". There is a Rampant Colt logo in a circle at the left rear of the frame. This gun has two-piece checkered hard rubber grips. Each grip has the Rampant Colt logo at the top. It has a lanyard loop at the bottom of the grip frame. Fire blue trigger, hammer, screws, and loading gate. CONDITION: This gun retains virtually all of the original factory-applied blue finish. There is some slight wear on the front of the ejector housing. The fire blue parts show just a hint of wear. Bright and shiny bore with sharp lands and grooves. Checkering on grips is sharp and crisp. The box is in good shape, with slight damage to the right lower corner of the lid. It is an extremely high-conditioned gun with an original box.
