1850s clip point Bowie knife. Acid etched panel on the clip point blade reads: "GEO WOLSTENHOLM & SON'S CELEBRATED (in script)/ CALIFORNIA KNIFE". Ricasso is marked: "G. WOSTENHOM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / NONE ARE GENUINE BUT THOSE / MARKED IXL". Crossguard is nickel silver. Grip scales are horn with nickel silver mounting pins, an unused nickel silver panel on left grip scale, and are capped with pinned Mother of Pearl pommel scales. CONDITION: Very good, with blade lightly cleaned and freckling throughout. The panel is still easily legible. Crossguard has light oxidation throughout. Grip scales have scattered large chips and areas of wear with pommel scales being excellent with no major signs of distress. Overall, a very attractive Bowie knife from the Gold Rush period.
