Only 1,626 of this model were made by Simeon North between 1813 and 1815. This makes it rarer than the Model 1799 North & Cheney martial pistol, as less were made. The original government contract called for 20,000 of these but due to harsh recoil and large size, this was revised. This contract is also important because it was the first time that a gun maker offered a product with interchangeable parts. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped with no visible markings remaining. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, and reinforced cock, center of lockplate stamped "S. NORTH / U. / (Eagle) / S. / MIDDLN. CON." Standard Model 1813 steel furniture. Walnut half-stock with Wickham band and wooden ramrod with steel cleaning rod tip. Left side of stock stamped behind rear lock bolt with indistinct inspector's cartouche. CONDITION: Steel components have been cleaned and retain a grey surface with scattered areas of pitting, lock markings excellent. Original flintlock configuration and functions well. Stock shows scattered marks from use, cracks, and small areas and dents filled. This is a good example of a very scarce and early American martial pistol. PROVENANCE: Ex. James Wertenberger, Larry Crain.
