1 of only approximately 400 Model 1817 Type I US Martial flintlock pistols estimated to have been manufactured at Springfield Armory while under the supervision of Colonel Robert Lee, utilizing a Model 1807/1808 pattern lock. The 10 - 5/8" barrel is stamped "1818" over the breech end, with a "P", "(Eagle head)", and "V" proof marks stamped along the left side. The bolted sideplate is stamped "SPRING/ FIELD/ 1818" at the tail, with an "(Eagle)" above "US" stamped forward of the swan neck cock, and features a distinctive "teat" termination at the rear of the plate. Trigger plate is stamped "EA". Barrel band features a brass blade front sight. Walnut stock bears no discernible cartouche. This example is accompanied by a detailed sheet from a previous owner, indicating the aforementioned proof marks, as well as noting that the top jaw, top jaw screw, and ramrod have been replaced. CONDITION: Barrel retains a mottled gray/brown patina, exhibiting areas of minor pitting and spots of dark discoloration overall, with similar wear present overall. Lock exhibits a gray patina, with areas of dark discoloration and some losses to the eagle stamp. In its original flintlock configuration. Frizzen is slightly loose, but appropriately locks into place when closed. Action functions appropriately. Stock is very good, exhibiting some minor superficial marks from storage and handling, with few minor losses present at the edges of the rear grip strap trigger guard tangs. A nice example of one of the rarest US martial flintlock pistols.
