59 - 1/4" overall, manufactured circa 1760 by an unknown gunsmith. The gun is marked on brass sideplate with "John Hovey" and dated "1775". Hovey has been identified as a member of the Windham Connecticut Minutemen, who were called up to fight at Lexington and Concord. He also enlisted in 1778 in Colonel Chapman's Company of the Connecticut militia, who were present at the siege of Newport in 1778. The gun has an octagon to round .69 caliber barrel with a missing dovetail front sight, no rear sight, and illegible proof marks at the breech. Large, unmarked musket-style flintlock with brass sideplate and blacksmith trigger with full cherry stock. Brass buttplate and trigger guard with brass ramrod ferrules and pewter nose cap. Comes with a hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Overall fair, with metal showing light pitting. Wood has a dark finish with possible old addition of some finish and has been cut and pieced a foot from the muzzle. The lock is a possible replacement and does not fit the mortise with the gun, most likely reconverted to flint. Dark bore with crisp mechanics. A great gun to do more research on.
