Desirable martially marked Fourth Model A.K.A. "Black Navy" Colt Model 1851 Navy made by Colt Firearms in 1858. The gun has "U.S." marking on the left frame side with "G.W.R." inspector marks on the butt, representing George W. Rogers, who was later killed in 1863 while storming Fort Sumter. This gun falls into a group delivered to the New York Naval Yards in 1859. The gun is also marked "JMcW" on the butt, which the consignor states possibly stands for John McWilliams, an acting USN 3rd Assistant Engineer from 1863 to 1865. Gun has 7 - 1/2" octagon .36 caliber barrel with Colt single line Hartford Address with a matching wedge, frame, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. 6 shot cylinder with visible Naval scene. Case hardened "Colt's Patent / U.S." marked frame. Rare iron trigger guard with "M" inspector mark and iron backstrap. Gun has 1-piece varnished walnut grips stamped "G.W.R.". Comes with a consignor research letter. CONDITION: Barrel shows fading blue, brown finish with light freckling, with all other metal fading to a silvery patina. The cylinder scene is still visible with what looks like marks on the cylinder made during loading. Grips are good with a dry-handled look to the finish. Dark bore with visible rifling and crisp mechanics.
