For a signed example with the same form, patchbox, and carving, see Rifle 13 on pg. 47 of "Berks County Longrifles & Gunmakers" by Patrick Hornberger. Stoffill Smith worked in Reading, Pennsylvania, in the early 19th century. This rifle is unsigned and features a 2-stage barrel. Germanic style lock. Brass furniture includes a classic 4-piece Reading patchbox, sideplate, and trigger guard. There are relief carved designs on the left side of the buttstock, around the barrel tang, lock and sideplate, comb, and ramrod entry ferrule. Stock of dramatic Roman nose / Berks County form, of partially figured maple. Complete with an old wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina; the modern lock is a well-aged replacement. Some wood around the lock is replaced, and about 22" at the forend on the right side and 2" on the left side, at muzzle. 14 - 5/8" back from the muzzle, there is a straight cut through the entire forestock; other minor scattered cracks, splinters, and some losses around pins. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina. From the Louie Parker Collection.
