1 of approximately 175 commercial contract Lugers manufactured by Mauser for various countries. The receiver is stamped "1938" over the chamber, with a double "(Crown)/ U" Oberndorf commercial proof stamped on the left and an additional double "(Crown)/ U" proof on the left side of the breechblock, as well as on the front face of the front sight block. Toggle bears the Mauser banner logo. Major metal components are salt blued, while some smaller components are strawed or nitre blued. Strawed components appear to have been reheated at one time. The frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered walnut grips. All numbers match, including the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open device, barrel, receiver, trigger bar, breechblock, firing pin, toggles, grips, as well as the magazine. CONDITION: Extremely fine, with metal components retaining the vast majority of their original blue finish, exhibiting very mild edge wear, few marks from storage and handling, and some scattered pinprick spots of oxidation on the grip straps. Strawed components are ensuite, retaining bountiful amounts of their finish. Brilliant mirror bore, exhibiting sharp and well-defined rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some mild smoothing from handling and a few minor marks from storage and handling but are otherwise fine. An extremely scarce example of a Mauser commercial contract Luger that the discerning collector would find extremely difficult to upgrade from.
