Exquisite original percussion Kentucky longrifle made by master gunsmith John Armstrong of Emmitsburg, Maryland, circa 1835. This gun is 1 of 4 known Armstrong rifles made in percussion rather than flintlock. Silver blade front sight, notched rear sight, and octagon barrel signed on an inlaid brass plate "John Armstrong". Handmade percussion lock signed in script "J A" for John Armstrong, with floral engraved C-shaped percussion hammer and double set triggers. Relief-carved full-length curly maple stock with brass hardware including an engraved 4-piece patchbox with 3 piercings, side "Pinwheel" finials, typical Armstrong floral finial, and push-button release in toeplate. Stock also has 12 engraved silver inlays, including an inlay above the cheekpiece with a detailed eagle, as well as the signature Armstrong heart inlays on both sides of the wrist. All hardware, except for the nosecap and 2 ramrod ferrules, has some form of floral engraving. Stock is magnificently carved in the classic Armstong fashion with relief carving behind the cheek-piece and unusual and ornate scalloping. The typical checkered panel is carved in relief under the cheekpiece along with scroll carving on the wrist and around the barrel tang. There is a stylized bellflower carved in relief around the ramrod entry ferrule and further carved with gadrooned panels in front of lock and sideplate. Flat brass barrel keys with engraved silver escutcheon plates. Complete with hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Overall good with some light surface frosting to metal and some pitting towards breech. Brass retains a pleasing soft mustard patina. Stock shows scattered dings and marks from use, some wear, and no major damage. A couple of long thin splinters were professionally replaced on the right side of the forend along the barrel. Good bore with visible rifling. The mechanism is strong and functions well. A super condition, ornate, and rare signed Armstrong Kentucky rifle. From the Louie Parker Collection.
