George Eister worked in York County, Pennsylvania, and his guns are rare and highly sought after. The deeply rifled octagon barrel is inscribed "G Eister" on the top flat. The flat lockplate has a molding at the tail and has been converted to percussion during its period of use. The brass furniture includes Eister's large engraved 4-piece patchbox, 6 piercings, a convex lid, and retained by 17 screws with convex heads. Faceted buttplate tang terminates with a nice relief roped panel. Sideplate engraved with scrolls and checkered panels. The long screw-retained toeplate has 2 rectangular piercings and the classic long thin rectangular iron patchbox release button. The barrel is retained by 4 brass barrel keys with silver overlaid heads. Engraved silver 8-point star above cheekpiece. Highly figured tiger maple stock of classic York County form. Profusely carved with thin delicate relief carved c-scrolls on both side and beneath cheekpiece. Scrolls and a flower carved in relief behind barrel tang and ramrod entry ferrule. Relief panels surround lock and sideplate. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, signature very good, and rifling is clean and strong. Lock is perhaps a replacement and a small piece of wood is replaced behind the tail. Lock retains a grey patina and functions properly. Brass furniture retains a pleasing soft mustard patina. Stock shows wear to carving and a break 6 - 1/4" from muzzle. There is a 3 - 1/4" well-disguised piece of wood replaced above and forward of ramrod entry ferrule. Some slivers and chips absent along forend. A very attractive rifle by a renowned master Golden Age maker. From the Louie Parker Collection.
CORRECTION: Although not visible, it is likely that a small section of the barrel, commensurate with the small section of replaced wood, has been professionally restored.
