Early Series 31 Type 99 bolt action short rifle manufactured by the Toyo Kogyo arsenal under Kokura supervision. The receiver bears an entirely intact chrysanthemum above Kanji characters denoting the model designation (Type 99) over the chamber, with a Kanji proof followed by the Series 31 symbol, serial number, and the Toyo Kogyo insignia present on the left hand side. Metal components are blued, while the 2-piece stock and upper handguard are comprised of solid wood. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, bolt body, safety knob, as well as on the underside of the bayonet lug. Firing pin is unnumbered. Additional features include an original wire monopod, bakelite muzzle cover, rear sight anti-aircraft wings, as well as a mismatched and refinished receiver dust cover. CONDITION: Exceptional, with metal components retaining the vast majority of their original arsenal applied blue finish exhibiting some minor spots and wear showing through to gray patina on the receiver, bolt assembly, and on the barrel at the muzzle, as well as some light surface oxidation on the trigger guard assembly and floorplate. Dust cover is excellent, as refinished, exhibiting areas of mild pitting beneath the bluing. Mirror chrome-lined bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Stock exhibits some scattered handling marks and minor impressions but is otherwise fine. An exceptional example of a Series 31 Type 99 short rifle manufactured at the Toyo Kogyo arsenal.
