Very clear, legible single page letter by Henry Knox dated, “Near Philadelphia 7th Nov. 1793,” requesting the endorsement of notes for $3750, “which are renewals in part for those endorsed the 9th of September,” and extending a cordial invitation: “and also be so good as to dine with me on Sunday/ Yours affectionately / H Knox.” Henry Knox (1750-1806) was self-educated in military affairs, particularly in artillery and military engineering, through his ownership of a book store in Boston, and became Washington’s trusted Chief of Artillery and eventually the army’s senior general. He forced the British out of Boston by transporting captured artillery to Boston from Ticonderoga at the beginning of the war and was credited for much of the success of Yorktown at the end, serving in between in the field with credit, though his suggestion to reduce the Chew mansion at Germantown before pressing forward was a mistake. He became the army’s youngest major general in March 1782, was the first Secretary of War under Washington, and was a founder of the Society of the Cincinnati. Knox was involved in programs for the national defense after the war, building a regular army and establishing militia laws. His organized training for artillery officers during the war is regarded as the precursor to the U.S. Military Academy. The letter is interesting in that Knox’s financial acumen was considerably less than his military ability and an invitation to dinner is rather appropriate, since he was known for his large stature and girth. CONDITION: Excellent. With a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. Ex. Lattimer Collection.
