Scarce and desirable autograph signature of famed naturalist, biologist, and geologist Charles Darwin, author of The Origin of Species, and contributor to evolutionary biology and the understanding of natural selection. The signature is attached to the bottom of a letter addressed to "My Young Friend," and ironically comes from St. George Jackson Mivart (1827-1900.) Mivart was a biologist who started out as a supporter of Darwin, but then sought to reconcile the theory of evolution with teachings of the Catholic Church, ending up alienating both parties. Mivart published "On the Genesis of Species," which Darwin carefully refuted, but then misrepresented Darwin in a review of Darwin’s Descent of Man. The two broke off relations about 1873. A signature desirable in itself and remarkable for the source. CONDITION: Excellent. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication Full Letter Authenticity. Ex. Lattimer Collection.
