1 of thousands of rifles purchased by the City of Philadelphia for their home guard during the onset of the Civil War. The rifle originally was a Springfield Model 1816 flintlock musket converted to percussion with 44" round .72 caliber smoothbore barrel converted to percussion with a patent breech system by Andrew Wurfflein with breech marked "City of Philada / A. Wurfflein". Converted Springfield with "(Eagle) / US" marked lock with a full-length military walnut stock with 3 iron bands and iron furniture. Comes with a replacement steel ramrod. CONDITION: Metal has faded to a silvery patina with areas of surface corrosion. Wood has a dark oil-soaked appearance with mainspring repair under the lock and several slivers missing along the forestock. The front band is a possible replacement. Dark pitted bore with stiff mechanics.
