11” high crown, reddish brown sombrero, with upturned brim lavishly adorned on both sides with opulent gold floral pattern stitching and sequins, two birds and a regal, three-dimensional, two-piece gold hat band with stylized gold spike ends.

CORRECTION: A very special Mexican sombrero, warm by Dixie W. Thompson in parades. Overly ornate, as well as his style. Gold thread forming leaves and vines, cones, huge showy bands and eagle decorations. The brim is trimmed in gold, thread and sequins. Seen in many photographs of Dixie, including the one on the opposite page. 10” tall crown and 5” brim. Circa 1800s. Provenance: Dixie W Thompson, Estate; to M.H. de Young museums, San Francisco, CA.
