Brescian flintlocks are particularly well regarded for their extensive inlay and gorgeous chiselwork. Other defining features are their long, thin barrels with the best ones produced by the Comminazo family of barrel makers, their light weight by nature of their strapwork, and remarkably easy handling. This is a very good example of the quintessential Brescian pistol with a thin-walled barrel signed "LAZARI COMINAZ" made in 3 stages with wedding rings at the girdles, fluted about the breech, and lightly engraved. Lock is signed "Pietro Agosti" and has extensive chiselwork depicting dragons, florals, and vinework. Stock has extensive strapwork in the typical Brescian pierced style and engraved with florals, shading, and more dragons. Buttcap and trigger guard are pierced and decorated en suite. Replaced ramrod is retained by a single ferrule that feeds into a reinforced mouth, and another small inlay at forearm tip, all decorated with piercings en suite. Stock with relief carving and molding along the forearm. CONDITION: Very good. Metal is essentially bright throughout with crisp engraving and some scattered areas of very minor darkness. Some shrinkage around inlays in stock that do not detract; all still tightly fit. Stock is good with handling marks and pressure dings throughout and has several splice repairs that are executed extremely well. mechanically fine, bore with a minimum of oxidation. A very attractive example.
