A brass military blunderbuss, measuring approximately 27 - 1/4" overall, making for a light and handy gun. Brass barrel with raised ring at breech, stamped or surcharged "U.S.N." in the breech ring with "1791" on the barrel tang. Beveled edge flat lock with light floral incised engraving. Brass-tipped ramrod retained by a single ferrule and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Plain brass sideplate and trigger guard, with a repair to rear of trigger guard. Full-length stock, unmarked, with a pinned brass buttplate. CONDITION: Overall good, showing evidence of hard period use and repair. Several spliced repairs throughout the stock including at fore end, front of trigger guard, sideplate, and front of lock. Brass has an even golden patina with some verdigris and buildup in recessed areas. Lock is essentially a chocolate patina with fire bluing on cock screw, which has a square nut on the male thread. An interesting gun that surely saw use.
