Unusual brass sheath measures approximately 19" to rear of breech and is formed in two stages, the first octagonal and engraved with a stand of arms depicting a crossed pair of horns, two flags, and crossed flintlocks over a helm, topped by what appears to be a globus cruciger or a dome, with a second stand of arms with flags, cannons, and drums. The second area is rounded and separated by wedding rings. Blade front sight on island with dressed edges. Touchhole with an old, possibly period, rebush. Forearm cap with arrowhead engraving. Trumpet-headed ramrod, too short but possibly the original as broken at reverse, is retained by a faceted ferrule and feeds into a reinforced mouth with a floral finial with is accented by a relief carved spearpoint finial. Lock is unsigned but engraved with a dog leaping towards a sitting hind. Brass trigger guard is cast and chased with a floral finial and a vignette of a hind and a doe in a clearing, with a typical Germanic swoop at the rear. Sideplate and buttplate are cast and chased with another doe and hind scene en suite. Wooden sliding patchbox cover with catscratch tip. CONDITION: Brass is very good, unpolished, with an attractive uncleaned, almost matte coloring. Iron components are essentially dove grey with some areas of darkness scattered about, with a small braized repair to bottom of barrel. Stock has several splice repairs, a few period nail repairs, and little slivers missing, but is solid and attractive. Mechanically fine, bore is good with some minor oxidation. An unusual gun with a barrel sleeve.
