Probably mid-18th century. Tapered straight diamond section blade period-altered at tip. On the right side there is the crown over lion engraved Landgraef crest. The opposite side is engraved with a large crown over "FL" monogram for Friedrich Landgraef III, (1673–1746), Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg. The brass half-basket guard features a large crown over a rampant lion wielding a sword and wearing a crown. Leather-wrapped wooden grip decorated with a strand of thick round brass wire. A tag accompanying this sword states "Apparently found under Barn Floor in eastern Bucks county across from Trenton some 20 years ago, 1 of 2 found." CONDITION: Blade has a very heavy patina with heavy rust, except for portions with engraving, which have been cleaned and have some brown spotting. Hilt retains a dark patina with some unusual heavy rust stains throughout on both interior and exterior, and possible traces of gilt on front. Leather washer present at top of blade. Leather shows one area of loss on top left side of grip. An interesting sword with an interesting attribution.
