Stout sugata with nagasa approximately 39.7cm of shobu zukuri construction, sori about 1.5cm, suggesting a mid-late Edo period date. Hamon is a suguha based hamon with ko-nie, a tight nioiguchi, and areas of what appears to be sunagashi. Somewhat out of polish but jihada looks to be mokume or itame. Kaeri katai ko-maru boshi. Katanamei signature for Fujiwara Shigetaka, with ura signed for Echizen production; no papers, possibly a later generation Shigetaka. Silver foil wrapped habaki. Silver foil seppa. Japanese mixed metal tsuba is pierced with 3 monks and a crane amongst florals, with damascened gold and both shibuchi and shakudo faces for the monks. Fuchi kashira with a nanako ground and several instances of the mokko kamon, a family mon common in Japan. Menuki depicting peacocks. Traditionally wrapped tsuka-ito in sea green. Saya with inlaid birds, and 2 more mokko mon at mouth for kozuka and at kurikata. CONDITION: Blade is out of polish, with some scattered areas of light patination and some scratches. Some ware visible at boshi. Lacquer on the saya is lifting and needs to be treated carefully to avoid further losses.
