Quarter plate Union officer image of a company grade officer of the 57th New York Infantry. Officer is wearing a 9-button infantry frock coat with shoulder straps, sword and eagle plate. Buttons, buckle, and sword are all hand-tinted in gold. He is wearing an officer's forage cap with a "57" surrounded by a gold bullion infantry hunting horn insignia. Image is housed in a full thermoplastic case featuring the Washington Monument. The 57th New York Infantry was organized at New York City, New York, beginning August 12, 1861, and mustered in for 3 years service on November 19, 1861, under the command of Colonel Samuel K. Zook. The regiment was attached to French's 3rd Brigade, Sumner's Division, Army of the Potomac, to March 1862. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, Army of the Potomac, to June 1864. Consolidated Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, to November 1864. The 57th New York Infantry mustered out of service by companies beginning July 14, 1864. Recruits and veterans were transferred to the 61st New York Infantry, and the regiment officially ceased to exist on December 6, 1864. The regiment was at some of the war's most famous engagements to include, Bull Run, Fair Oaks, Seven Days, Antietam, Gettysburg, Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania Court House, Assault on the Salient or "Bloody Angle", North Anna River, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. CONDITION: Excellent clarity with solid case.
