A large and impressive circa 1880s Eastern Plains Indian tomahawk. Measures 27" long with a large tapered 12 - 1/4" spontoon style blade with basal processes. Blade is inlaid on both sides with designs of catlinite and black lignite or onyx. Pipe stem haft is drilled for smoking and displays 2 rows of brass tacked lines just aft of the bowl and near the mouthpiece, as well as 39 tacks across the top edge, with a total of 71 tacks overall. Consignor tag that accompanies the tomahawk states that it is attributed to the Sisseton Sioux and that a mate to this piece is in the National Museum of the American Indian. CONDITION: Tomahawk shows an even patina overall with nice age on the unpolished tacks. Blade tip shows a slight bend to the right.
