A Confederate cavalry saber complete with original scabbard that falls into the “Dog River” category, Albaugh’s romantically named category for swords not yet identifiable to a specific maker. This generally follows the US M1840 configuration with brass pommel and 3-branch guard. The grip is cone shaped and curves narrowing slightly toward the pommel. The grooved grip is wrapped with black leather but does show old wear spots exposing the wood on the upper obverse where the ridges of a trooper’s palm would rub it. The grip is wrapped with heavy iron wire. The pommel, branches and counterguard have a nice, untouched, aged patina. Counterguard is contoured, with a lower edge. Guard is loose. The oval brown leather blade pad is in place. No brass throat. The blade is typically Confederate, following standard lines with a slight curve, single edge, and unstopped fuller. The edge shows exhibits a nick toward the tip with scattered pitting throughout its length. Evidence of an older polishing. The scabbard is crude with narrow brass ring bands. Overlap seam is quite visible. Large iron drag. Both iron carrying rings are in place. There are some shallow dings, mostly on the reverse between the bands where it would be banging against the trooper’s thigh or saddle. The surface exhibits a pleasing chocolate patina, but is solid with no holes. CONDITION: Good.
