For a similar example, see Fig. 446 on pg. 207 of "Muskets of the Revolution" by Bill Ahearn. The text explains that Dutch guns with rounded locks came back into favor in the 1770s. This example is marked "GENERALITIT" on the top, towards the breech. The convex lockplate is marked with a small indistinct makers mark in the center, below the pan. Brass furniture, including an "S" shaped sideplate and 3 barrel bands, the foremost retained by iron spring. The oval wrist escutcheon is marked "No. 553". Walnut stock of classic Dutch form with cheekrest cutout on left side of comb. Relief panels around barrel tang, lock, and sideplate. 3 notches behind rear trigger guard tang. CONDITION: Barrel cleaned and shows some light pitting throughout. Marking shows some wear. Lock retains a brown patina, top jaw screw is a period replacement. Brass retains a mellow patina. Stock shows scattered bruises and marks from use. A very attractive Dutch musket.
