Lot consists of: (A) A Model 1858 forage cap that the consigner notes was discovered at an estate sale in Portland, Oregon in 2008. Included information notes that the cap height measures approximately 3 - 1/2" in front and 5 - 3/4 in rear. The crown has a 5" diameter and the brass slide is 7/8" x 3/4" with a brass crossbar at rear. There are 2 leather chinstraps that measure 9 - 1/2" long with brass eagle buttons strongly sewn at each end. The body is constructed of dark blue forage cloth with a crescent-shaped leather visor that is 2" wide at the front. The base of the cap is stiffened with buckram, and the crown is stiffened by stout circular pasteboard. The interior is nicely lined and features a leather sweatband that remains secured to the cap. This forage cap was stored flat in a riker mount but retains some of its shape when handled. Obvious mothing and blemishes to the forage cloth. Leather brim is stiff, chinstrap remains somewhat pliable with noticeable cracking. Brass components exhibit a pleasing patina. Lining is nicely intact with scattered staining. CONDITION: fair. (B) US Regulation 1839 Pattern belt plate with wire attachment loops. 1 loop missing. A tag attached to the plate states that it was "Dug at Bloody Angle Spotsylvania". CONDITION: Relic.
