David Dryhurst is particularly notable in the trade as a gunmaker for several of the English Best quality makers, including Greener, Boss (Dryhurst built the John Robertson boxlocks), Holland & Holland, and others. Dryhurst only built 9 boxlocks that have his name, and all of them were identical. All of the guns were engraved by Walter Howe, who worked at Webley & Scott but also engraved guns for Boss. 26" barrels are built with dovetail lumps, ejectors, a solid, tapering, smooth, slightly concave rib with a steel bead, and signed "D.J. DRYHURST BIRMINGHAM", with dressed breeches and a sprig of floralwork on the rib. Barrel flats with modern Birmingham nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers, a nominal .729 IBD, and 3 - 1/4 PSI tonnage; serial numbers on bottoms of each tube. Splinter forearm with an Anson style plunger release is checkered in a point pattern with well executed floral engraving on exterior iron. Interior with excellent case colors and engraved with matching serial number. Water tables with serial number, Birmingham nitro proofs. Boxlock action with "D.J. DRYHURST" on each side, engraved with well executed floral scroll en suite, and case colored. Equipped with double triggers, automatic safety with "SAFE" inlaid in gold, and a rolled right edge trigger guard with engraving en suite. Straight grip stock of a lovely, largely straight grained walnut with a slightly smoky feel and attractive fiddlebacking, is checkered about the wrist in a point pattern, has a silver oval at toe line engraved with initials "LCR", and ends in a horn buttplate. Cast slightly off for a right handed shooter. Housed in a leather wrapped makers case with a Dryhurst trade label in lid, with wine colored lining. CONDITION: Barrels retain the majority, approximately 80%, of their factory black, with most losses on left side of barrel above forearm, from carrying. Case colors are relegated to protected areas, with strong color in those areas. Stock with some light handling marks, somewhat dry, but solid. Mechanically fine, ejectors are in time, bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Case is very good with some handling marks. This is a very attractive gun by a scarce maker.
