A very nice example of a pre-Civil War militia officer's belt most likely dating to the 1840s. The rig consists of a west belt, plate, and sword hanger. The plate is constructed of brass and was ornately silvered, featuring a spread wing up eagle perched atop of a US flag, with banner that reads "PROTECTION" in front of beak. Silvered belts were indicative of infantry units and this belt was most likely worn by a militia infantry officer. The plate and belt are marked "THE PETTIBONE BROS. / MFG. CO. / CIN'TI.O." in 3 places: the reverse of the plate, the leather belt, and the sword hanger. Pettibone Bros sold military goods, uniforms, regalia, and US regulation swords including cavalry sabers, medical and pay department swords, and M1850 officer swords. The belt remains quite supple with smooth surface only light blemishes. Belt plate and hanger retain generous amounts of their original silver. Verdigris buildup around plate and hanger. A very nice example of a militia belt. CONDITION: Very good.
