Lot consists of: (A) Private purchase Civil War officer's dress "box" spurs. Illustrated in the 1864 Schuyler, Hartley and Graham catalog and retailed by other military goods dealers. Both spurs are marked “MAXWELL” on the neck indicating Henry Maxwell of London, a spur-making firm founded in 1750 that expanded into other horse gear, exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition, and is credited by some with the invention of the box spur in the very early 1800s. They are in high gilt finish and are housed in their original maroon felt lined hinged leatherette box. (B) Pair of 1940s era "KELLY" marked spurs. Nickel finish with straps. Floral engraved patterns on bands and shanks. 9-point blunted rowels. (C) New York marked cavalry World War I brass spurs. Shanks are stamped: "C154" and "C NY." (D) Nickeled steel gentleman's spurs, circa Mexican War period. CONDITION: All are overall very good.
