The low-crown chasseur style kepi popular during the Civil War with the more dashing officers and was officially adopted as the pattern for the fatigue cap in 1872. The lot consists of 5 of these caps: (A) M1872 forage with bullion 2nd Infantry (crossed rifles) insignia. Bullion chinstrap secured by Oregon buttons at either side. Reapplied black leather brim with complete sweatband. Liner exhibits illegible maker mark. US Military Academy M1872 forage cap with beautiful bullion insignia contained in a riker frame. Leather chinstrap secured by rimmed eagle USMA buttons at either side. Thick leather brim. Liner is marked "Cadet QM Dept. U.S.M.A." 1 significant hole to right of crown. (C) M1872 forage cap with leather chinstrap secured by New York buttons at either side. Thick leather brim with 7 - 1/8 sticker on underside. Brown leather sweatband with partial name. Marked by "RIDABOCK & CO." on interior pasteboard crown. (D) M1872 forage cap with GAR post 362 bullion insignia. Bullion chinstrap secured by GAR buttons. Thick leather brim with worn brown leather sweatband. Quality liner marked "R. Streckert". Very good with retained shape. (E) M1872 style forage cap constructed of white wool with bullion design on crown. Black brim with brown leather sweatband. Inside is marked "Ted Howard Jr. / 3rd Drum Regt. / Knoxville, Tenn." in what appears to be brown paint. Possibly worn by a Confederate veteran. Scattered mothing, most evident at front of cap. CONDITION: Varying, with caps exhibiting blemishes typical of old wool and leather. Brims exhibit repairs, scratches, or cracks. A very nice group of caps. Fair-very good.
