Beattie is recorded as a gunmaker and cap maker at 223 Regend Street between 1836 and 1846. Large 6-barrel cluster in the dragoon sized .44 caliber. Each chamber has their own numerical designation, and the flutes have British proofs. German silver round body frame with integral recoil shield is engraved with floral scroll on a hatch shaded ground; left side reads "J. BEATTIE / 223 REGENT St LONDON", right side reads "IMPROVED / REVOLVING PISTOL" with engraving en suite. Hammer engraved with floral edging. English-style push-on safety. 2 piece walnut grips with replaced grip screw. Backstrap engraved with florals en suite. Iron trigger guard with florals and dressed edges. Housed in a period wooden case with a brass oval in lid engraved with "AUDACTER" (trans: Boldly) on a belt surrounding a raging boar. Case is partitioned for pistol, ramrod with hidden jag, powder flask, oil jar, Eley cap tin, combination bullet mold and sprue cutter. CONDITION: Barrels are essentially a chocolate patina with some areas of fine oxidation, heavier at gulets. German silver is very good with crisp engraving and easily readable legends. Trigger guard polished bright and engraving almost entirely gone. Grips with pressure marks and dings from use throughout, including an area of what appears to be heat distortion. Grip screw replacement. Mechanically fine, bores are very good. Case is very good with some visible blue repairs to the partition walls; accessories are good with typical age-related distress and handling marks.
