Full-stock Kentucky rifle made by J. H. Johnston circa 1840 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. 40" octagon .45 caliber rifled barrel with silver blade front sight and notch rear sight and barrel beautifully signed "J. H. Johnston". Percussion Jos. Golcher marked lock with double set trigger control. Full length curly maple stock with brass hardware, including an engraved Johnston-style pointed oval finial 4-piece patchbox. Stock is decorated with 15 coin silver engraved inlays, including a full-spread eagle cheek inlay (unusual inlay for Johnston). Stock is also carved with the usual Johnston "swoosh" carving behind the cheek with three forestock molding gouges tastefully spaced between forestock inlays. The wrist has period iron strap repair with some plastic wood. Comes with a hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Metal has turned a plum patina with areas of light pitting. The hardware has been cleaned and polished. Wood has had a coat of wax with areas of burnout around the lock and a stable period repaired wrist. Dark pitted bore with visible rifling with good mechanics.
