A nice example of a Civil War era Model 1852 Naval Officer's sword which was presented to Admiral Henry W. Lyon. The sword is in standard M1852 configuration with a blade decorated for about half its length with naval motifs, though most are muted. The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered blemishes and faint traces of the decorations are noticeable. Ricasso is marked "CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN" with the signature knight marking. Open work oak leaf and acorn crossguard with USN banner and serpent quillon. Hilt exhibits a pleasing patina that is complimented by a bullion sword knot. Sharkskin-wrapped wood grip with a few areas of wear and tight brass wire. Complete with leather scabbard with brass mounts, fouled carry bands, and serpent drag. Scabbard exhibits wear with tight seam. Mounts exhibit polishing evidenced by the faint presentation on the mount which reads "H.A. Lyon / U.S.N." Henry Lyon entered the Navy on 7 October 1862, served throughout the Civil War, Indian Wars, and retired in 1907 as a Rear Admiral. He is most noted for commanding the USS Dolphin during the Spanish American War, where he served on blockade duty off Havana, Cuba and came under fire from the Morro Battery at Santiago. The Dolphin provided fire support for elements of the 1st Marine Battalion at the Battle of Cuzco Well in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba resulting in a total rout of the Spanish forces. CONDITION: Good.
