An attractive example of a circa 1820s-1840s Federal Period saber, most likely for a cavalry officer. The saber features a 31" blade with pronounced curve, and decorated with nicely executed panels of foliate and patriotic motifs. The panels were once fire blued, as evidenced by remnants of the original finish. Gold inlaid designs include a patriotic eagle and liberty-capped panoply of arms on the obverse and liberty-capped panoply of arms and floral scrolls on the reverse. No visible maker mark, but spine is stamped "3". Beautiful shell languets compliment the gilded brass hilt, which features a stirrup guard and flower quillon. Dove head pommel with full backstrap cast and chased with shell designs that secures the carved bone grip. Complete with gilded brass scabbard that features 2 carry mounts and subdued drag. The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered edge wear and pitting toward the tip. Etchings are muted but visible. Hilt exhibits a pleasing honey patina including bone grip. Decent amounts of gilding present. Grip with a few small hairlines and 1 chip toward pommel. Scabbard exhibits fingerprint impressions throughout its length and scattered small dents and scuffs. CONDITION: Good.
