It is believed just 374 Winchester Model 1886 models were produced making them the rarest standard configuration 1886. As with other Winchester muskets, socket bayonets were standard. Per an included copy of a 1987 dated factory letter, this rare example shipped January 8, 1889, with 11 other arms as a musket in .45-70 with a saber bayonet rather than the standard socket style. Rifle sports a standard 30" round barrel stamped with 2-line address and ".45-70" caliber designation. Blade front sight and military-style ladder rear. Case-hardened receiver with a plain trigger. Full-length smooth walnut forend with a central sling swivel barrel band and steel nose cap with bayonet lug on right side. Plain walnut buttstock with rear sling swivel and steel tool trap butt plate. Musket is accompanied by correct style sword bayonet with 20" crown "C" proofed yataghan blade, fish scale patterned brass grip, and black leather scabbard. Bayonet fits very tightly. CONDITION: Very good overall. Metal exhibits a silvery gray patina throughout. Stocks have a aged appearance with scattered marks. Very strong bright bore with some abrasion near the muzzle. Crisp mechanics. Bayonet is very fine, the scabbard showing minor losses to leather surface. An extremely rare documented '86.
