This infantry officer’s coat likely dates from 1866 to 1872. It might pass for Civil War but for the use of striped material for the sleeve lining, which is generally taken as a late sign. The lining of the chest, back and sides is not quilted, but that is not an absolute requirement for wartime dating. The 9-button front with 3 cuff buttons is typically wartime, and this example exhibits 2 buttons on each cuff. The cuffs are not functional, but that too would be acceptable, though the sleeves do not have much of a billow. The length of the skirt is good. The straps are a light blue material with gold bullion border and silver bullion rank. All buttons are eagle-I buttons and are backmarked "EXTRA QUALITY" which were used throughout the 1850s-1860s. The frock coat is very clean overall. It shows a few stains from use, but no significant mothing. The seams are good and the interior shows just a little wear. L-shaped repair on right cuff. CONDITION: Very good.
