This cavalry officer’s coat likely dates 1866 to 1872. It might pass for Civil War but for the use of striped material for the sleeve lining, which is generally taken as a late sign. The lining of the back and sides is not quilted, but that is not an absolute requirement for wartime dating. Chest is quilted with royal blue thread. High collar is velvet lined with noticeable areas of loss. The 9-button front with 3 cuff buttons is typically wartime. The cuffs are not functional, but that too would be acceptable, though the sleeves do not have much of a billow. The length of the skirt is good. The straps are a yellow material with gold bullion border and silver bullion rank. All buttons are general service eagle buttons and are backmarked by various makers. Buttons are attached with same royal blue thread in lining. Collar label is marked "G.F. FOSTER, SON & CO / CHICAGO". Very clean overall. It shows a few stains from use, but no significant mothing. The seams are good and the interior exhibits slight wear. CONDITION: Very good.
