A wonderfully embellished example of a presentation grad M1860 Staff and Field officer's sword that features a double fullered Damascus blade decorated for about half its length with elegantly executed scrollwork. Ricasso is marked on each side by a crown proof, but the sword is otherwise unmarked. Brass hilt with guard and folding counterguard, each heavily detailed with patriotic and decorative motifs. The guard features a thick eagle with spread wings in the foreground of stars and stripes. Counterguard folds and unfolds properly. Quillon features a patriotic shield. Knucklebow is lush with oak leaves and acorns. Pommel is round, embellished with rococo palmettes, and topped with a beaded capstan. Grip is also brass but silver-finished, also heavily adorned. Complete with steel scabbard that features a beautifully blued finish with brass mounts that are heavily decorated. The blade is very clean overall with only light scattered blemishes. Hilt exhibits generous amounts of original gilding with one area of finish loss to grip. Scabbard exhibits scattered blemishes throughout its length with areas of surface-level oxidation overall, with a few scattered spots of concentrated oxidation present toward the drag. This is an excellent example of a presentation grade M1860 Staff and Field officer's sword which would only be surpassed by a named example that is of equal quality. CONDITION: Very good.
