Signed "Jas. H. Taylor" on offset flat of octagonal barrel; no maker matching this name is listed in American Gunsmiths. 15" barrel is turned at the muzzle to accept a bullet starter, stamped "150" at muzzle, and fit with a hooded bead on post front sight and "lollipop" aperture rear sight mounted to rear sight blank boss. Action is unmarked. Wire stock fits through a slot in frame but does not have a retention system. CONDITION: Metal is essentially a smooth chocolate patina with silvering to high edges and high-traffic areas such as muzzle. Burnout around breech from heavy use. Grips are very good with some handling marks and scratches throughout. Bore is very good with strong rifling. Overall construction suggests that it is a form of buggy rifle, so called due to their compact nature allowing them to fit under a buggy seat and for the story that they would be brought to picnics after Sunday morning services for an impromptu shooting match.
