Manufactured in 1859 under government contract, bearing US inspector markings, many saw frontier service with 1st and 2nd Dragoons and Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, as well as service in the Civil War. Revolver is fit with a standard blued 7 - 1/2" octagon to round barrel roll marked with 1-line New York address. German silver blade front sight and hammer notch rear. Case hardened frame marked on the left "COLTS / PATENT / U.S.". Grip straps are brass with 3rd model round trigger guard. 2-piece smooth walnut grips impressed with a script "WAT" cartouche on the right, as well as a partially illegible cartouche on the left. Other major components are marked with sub-inspector marks. CONDITION: Very good. Traces of original blue present in the protected areas of the barrel assembly, the balance fading to brown patina. Traces of case color are likewise retained on the frame. Grip straps display a mellow, golden patina with some nicks. Grips are very good with some wear and a few chips along the base as well as scattered impressions. Cylinder scene is mostly illegible, although other markings remain strong. Bright bore with strong, well-defined rifling and a few imperfections. Mechanics are crisp, the cylinder having been bushed. Full or partial matching serial numbers observed on the frame, barrel assembly, loading lever, wedge, cylinder, arbor, and grip straps. A nice example of a desirable martial Colt Dragoon.
