Flintlock Kentucky Style rifle signed "J. Mewhirter" for John Mewhirter of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, circa 1815 to 1830. 56" overall with 40" octagon rifled .52 caliber barrel with rifle sights and signed "J. Mewhirter". Unmarked late flintlock period lock with roller frizzen and double set trigger control. Full length curly maple stock with engraved brass hardware, including a Franklin/Cumberland County style "Q" finial with floral tail finial 4-piece patchbox. The stock also has 4 silver inlays with 2 hearts on the wrist, a silver thumbpiece, and a Federal Eagle engraved on silver oval cheekpiece. Stock is nicely incise carved with floral pattern behind cheek and tailpipe. Comes with a period hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Overall good. Metal has some freckling, turning to a dark brown patina. The brass has been polished and is starting to return to a golden-yellow color. The lock appears to be a conversion and fits mortise well, with some burnout from percussion conversion. Stock has been lightly cleaned with a small 1/4" sliver replaced along top of forestock near muzzle. Small hairline crack underneath lock. Dark pitted bore with functioning mechanics. A great looking Kentucky.
