While the percussion LeMat revolvers are the most iconic, the post-Civil War redesign that used cartridges is far rarer. This is a classic full sized example of the redesign with 1877 patent modifications, with matching "153" numbers on trigger guard, cylinder (with ELG Belgian proof), cylinder axis (with Belgian "(Crown) / L" proof), inside of side plate, hammer, shotgun loading gate, lanyard loop stud, and underside of barrel assembly (with another "(Crown) / L" proof). Blade front sight, notch rear sight, rotating striker on hammer for engaging shotgun barrel, shotgun ejector, screwdriver in butt. Bore measures approximately .44 caliber, with rimmed cartridges; .44-40 is too long. CONDITION: Metal is essentially dove grey throughout with patches of oil staining and darkness throughout. There is evidence of touch-up with cold blue or equivalent in several areas throughout, with some softening to legends as a result. Some mild pitting in several areas, inactive. Ejector rod housing is missing the retaining screw but is reasonably tight. Mechanically fine, including striker, bores are very good with some minor areas of oxidation, strong rifling in rifled barrel. Grips are good, somewhat dry, with handling marks throughout. A good example of a scarce gun.
