An attractive circa 19th-century heavy sword marked by German maker Ewald Cleff. The sword features a 39" Damascus blade with long ricasso marked "EWALD CLEFF / SOLINGEN". Heavy 4-band brass guard with slightly curved quillon and thick knuckle bow. Tiered pommel with flat cap that is adorned with a crest that possibly denotes a town, city, or family. Grooved sharkskin grip with center swell that features thick twisted strands of brass wire that fit neatly into the recesses. Complete with nickeled scabbard that features 2 carry rings. The blade is very clean overall, with scattered blemishes and a gray patina. Guard exhibits a pleasing patina with scattered age-related dark spots. Scattered traces of original gilding are present. Intact grip with a few scuffs and handling wear. Tight brass wire. Scabbard exhibits scattered areas of oxidation with areas of finish loss. CONDITION: Very good.
