Farrell McDermot (sometimes McDermott) is recorded in Dublin circa 1796-1827. This is a scarce pair of true duellers and are made in identical configuration with heavy, round, stub Damascus barrels with hooked patent breeches, flat sighting blades with a dovetailed blade front sight, notch rear sight mounted to tang, and signed "M Dermot Dublin" on sighting plane. Barrels are retained by a single key with silver escutcheons. Hardwood-tipped ramrods are retained by a single ferrule on half-rib soldered to bottom of barrel and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Flat beveled edge flintlock with stepped rear, gold lined waterproof pans, bridled pan covers, roller bearing frizzens, and diminutive reinforced cocks, signed "McDermot" with light floral engraving. Breech with inlaid silver bands. Spurred trigger guard with single set trigger and an elaborate pineapple finial. Stocks with a vacant rectangular escutcheon on sideplanel, checkered wrists, and flared pommels with floral engraving. Case with green baize lining and partitioned for accessories including a powder flask with extra compartments for caps and balls, an oil bottle, patch cutter, mainspring vice, combination loading and cleaning rod, cleaning tips, some cast balls, and remnants of a trade label in lid. CONDITION: Pistols have been brought back up with some areas of old inactive oxidation throughout, some areas deeper than others. Barrels with attractive browning and attractive twist, some softening to legends from rebrown and oxidation. Locks with clear engraving and legends, somewhat softened from rehabilitation en suite with barrels. Wood similarly refreshed with some handling marks and some gaps around furniture, particularly notable at the trigger guard finial. Mechanically fine, except for set trigger on (A), which won't hold; bores are good with minimal oxidation. Accessories are very good and have clearly been with the set for some time with areas of oxidation commensurate with pistols. A very attractive pair of scarce pistols.
