This Jaeger displays many of the characteristics that contributed to the designs used on early Pennsylvania longrifles. The swamped octagon barrel features a brass front sight and a 2-leaf rear sight with stylized flour-de-lis finial. The barrel tang is engraved with a large "12". The flat banana lockplate has beveled edges and a flute at the tail. The brass furniture includes an engraved buttplate with engraved foliate tang finial. Back of buttplate engraved "No. 3". Trigger guard engraved en suite. Sideplate has beveled edges and stepped tail, engraved with simple designs. Rifle features double-set triggers. Full-length walnut stock with relief molding along ramrod channel and terminating behind ramrod entry ferrule in a leaf-shaped design. Relief panels around lock and sideplate terminating in teardrops. Ornate relief rococo shell carved behind barrel tang and behind cheekpiece on left side. Relief wavy molding around comb on both sides. Sliding wooden patchbox with relief horizontal panels. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel bright, showing some light pitting throughout. Rifling is deep and excellent. Lock mechanism is strong and lock is in its original flintlock configuration. All furniture polished. Stock retains a pleasing surface, 1 tiny splinter absent at nosecap on left side. A very attractive mid-18th century Germanic Jaeger rifle.
