For an identical example, see plate 62.S on page 82 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George Neumann. As stated in the book, this example is of the earlier variety, as the brass hilt is composed of 2 pieces, the knucklebow and guard being one, and the grip and pommel being the other. The unfullered slightly curved blade is engraved with foliate motifs near the top on the right side along with 2 French markings. The left side is engraved "GRENADIER" in block letters. Complete with its original brown leather scabbard with brass mounts and buff leather hanger. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina with scattered light freckling. Brass mostly polished and shows some scattered minor marks from use. Scabbard top mount has one area of loss and is otherwise excellent, some minor surface cracks and marks from use on leather. A great example of a French infantry hanger.
