An extremely rare bell top shako that was standard officer's headwear from 1829-1844. The Shako features a large, approximately 11" diameter, crown and is constructed of pressed felt with leather crown, leather peak, and pressed felt sides. V sections of leather on both sides with all of its correct lion over crown side bosses. Flat disc form chin scales which are secured at the center of the crown with a cloth rosette above the plate which bears the Royal Coat of Arms and hides the provision for the red and white plume. The helmet is complete with its original leather sweatband and cloth liner. Original label is present and reads "LOCK & Co. / HATTERS / St. JAMES STREET / LONDON". No visible evidence of any damage or holes that have been repaired. The fitting of the plate to the front of the helmet is with its original holes, indicating that the plate is original to the shako. Felt exterior of the helmet with slight stains that do not detract from display. The felt backing of the chin scales is intact with scales exhibiting a nice patina. Liner is very good with minor wear and tight stitching. Brim with light cracks to underside. An excellent example of a British bell top shako. CONDITION: Very good.
