An eye catching Victorian era British 12th Lancers Officer's Chapka. The helmet is constructed of hard leather and features an immense brass helmet plate bearing battle-honors to Central India beneath the Royal Arms and the Sphinx; the multiple battle honors date it to the Victorian era. Original scarlet feather plume and comes with brass interlocking ring chin scales nicely backed by leather. Ornate lion head mounts are present and remain firmly attached to the helmet. Excellent bullion trim and red fabric that remains tight. Left side features a bullion rosette with embroidered "VR" on blue velvet for 12th Lancers. High quality leather sweatband with tight stitching and scattered staining from wear. Excellent burgundy lining with clear maker mark "HAWKES & CO. HELMET, CAP, SWORD, & ACCOUTRAMENT MAKERS". The body exhibits surface spider webbing but remains sturdy. This is a very nice example of a most colorful of Lancer Chapka that would incite conversation, at the very least. CONDITION: Very good.
