Manufactured in the mid-19th century, likely made either in France by Dumonthier or in Norway for use in the Postal Service. In 1846, the Norwegian Postførerverge issued these knife pistols to postal workers after a series of violent attacks. They would be produced until 1854. 14" double-edged spearpoint blade with 4" smoothbore .36 caliber Damascus barrels on either side of blade fuller. Marked "LD" on right ricasso. Triggers drop down when hammers (which are part of the guard) are pulled rearward similar in function to a Colt Paterson. Nickel silver grips. Complete with period leather wrapped wood scabbard and ramrod. CONDITION: Very good, with blade showing age-related light freckling throughout, as well as evidence of heavy cleaning. Grips are loose as the screw near the pommel is stripped, and the inside of grips show several repairs with solder. Mechanically fine. Bores show light abrasion throughout. The scabbard throat is loose with a repair at throat with solder but is otherwise complete with handling marks throughout.
